Shillong, April 30: Expressing concern on the attack on a faculty member of NEHU, The United A’chik Socio Economic Justice Forum (UASEJF) has pointed out that campus politics and administrative challenges have contributed to an unstable environment, leaving students—particularly those from the Garo Hills—feeling alienated and at a disadvantage.
The forum has strongly condemned the recent attack on Dr. Alok Singh, an Assistant Professor in the Hindi Department at North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU), Shillong. The incident, in which members of the NEHU Students’ Union allegedly assaulted and confined Dr. Singh in his office, has sparked outrage and renewed calls for action.

The forum described the assault as a grave violation of academic integrity and safety, highlighting the growing unrest within the NEHU Shillong campus.
The UASEJF has called for a swift and impartial investigation into the attack to ensure justice, enhanced security measures for faculty and students at NEHU Shillong, immediate upgradation of the NEHU Tura campus into a fully-fledged independent university with expanded courses and improved infrastructure and decentralization of higher education in Meghalaya to reduce reliance on the Shillong campus.

The forum plans to submit a formal memorandum to the Chief Minister, Education Minister, and Home Minister of Meghalaya, urging swift action. The forum emphasised that upgrading the NEHU Tura campus would provide students from Garo Hills with better academic opportunities without having to depend on Shillong, which has witnessed repeated disruptions.
“The government must act decisively to ensure academic safety and equity in higher education,” stated the UASEJF, urging immediate intervention for a better future for Meghalaya’s students.
