Garo group raises plight of villagers in Chokpot where basic amenities remain a pipe dream

Must read

Tura, June 18: Garo organization ACHIK has questioned the lack of development in today’s modern day era citing the example of Dajigre village under Chokpot Civil Sub-Division of South Garo Hills, that is just 26 kms away from Tura town, where people still do not have basic amenities such as drinking water, health care or even a road.

Trudging through a jungle path and inaccessible terrain for well over an hour is the only way to reach Dajigre village , where one is greeted by a scene that looks like time stood still.

A group of volunteers under the Achik Conscious Holistically Integrated Krima (ACHIK) paid a visit to the village on June 17 after hearing of its people’s plight.

“The village lacks access to fundamental necessities like road connectivity, electricity, drinking water facilities, healthcare facilities, and much more. We were struck by the villagers resilience despite the absence of basic amenities even as they relied on primitive means for their daily needs,” said Thomas Marak, President of the ACHIK organization.

They were taken aback by the villagers disclosure that the village has been without electricity for well over three years.

“Our children depend on small solar panels to do their homework and prepare for the exams. We lack many basic things in life,” lamented villager Bathison A Sangma.

He narrated how the entire village has to depend on temporary makeshift bridges and steep jungle routes to travel to the nearest town, Chokpot, for marketing, medical treatment and even during emergencies during the monsoon season when the rains fall continuously for days at a stretch.

Witnessing the harrowing experience the villagers have to endure every day of their lives, the ACHIK organization has announced plans to collaborate with the local authorities to develop a comprehensive plan to mitigate the suffering of the inhabitants.

“Building and repairing roads, installing electricity infrastructure, establishing a reliable and safe drinking water supply, ensuring the availability of healthcare facilities and improving access to education will be top priorities our organization will demand from the authorities,” stated the group.
