Garo Hills becomes infamous for electrocution deaths, another death in Siju

Tura, Jan 6: Garo Hills is becoming a death trap for citizens who are becoming victims of electrocution due to sheer carelessness of the officials and workers of MeECL and its sister concerns dealing with power distribution and transmission.

Every few months an innocent life is lost in Garo Hills due to electrocution death and even young children have been left maimed for life for no fault of theirs.

The latest casualty of the sheer lack of proper care by power department is a 60 year old man who died after touching a post that was leaking with electricity in the Siju region of South Garo Hills.

The incident happened in the Nengkong region of Siju on 4th January 2023.

The victim was Lt. Albish Ch. Marak (60), r/o Nengkhong Bunakol, PS. Siju, South Garo Hills.
Albish Ch Marak left home to look for his missing dog on January 4th morning and was last seen heading towards an area where a powerful 11 KV electric pole stood.

When he failed to return the villagers launched a search and found his body next to the electric pole at Jantagre village.

Preliminary enquiry by police indicate that the victim may have touched the pole thorugh which electric current was flowing resulting in his electrocution death.

Police are conducting an investigation into the incident.

This is not the first instance of electrocution in recent times. Every few months cases of electrocution deaths are reported from various parts of Garo Hills.

Previous cases include a young school boy getting electrocuted after he entered a transformer that was not barricaded leading to amputation of his limbs.

Another case involved a biker who skidded off the road and fell on a live electric wire that was not removed causing his death.

A few months ago, a rag picker lost his life in Tura when he unknowingly entered a transformer block inside the PHE office campus in Tura.
