Garo Hills Calamity: Conrad assures aid to all as non-indigenous residents raise concerns

Must read

Shillong, Oct 9: The recent destruction in Garo Hills is unprecedented and none has been left untouched. While Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Tuesday toured and met flood and landslide affected people in West Garo Hills, comforting and assuring them support, he was suddenly drawn to a large group of residents at Choipani in Dalu – the non-indigenous residents of Garo Hills.

While the indigenous people have been given gratuitous relief and support by the government, these people complained that they are yet to receive any support from the government, to the point that the officials were not even recording their names.

Some of the residents said they were denied assistance in the absence of a job card or not being registered under the Village Employment Council.

The Chief Minister, after a patient hearing, assured the residents that all assistance would be provided even to those who do not possess a job card under a special assistance. He was also seen directing the DC and SDO to take note of all the concerns of the residents and provide full assistance. The local MLA, Brening Sangma was also present with the Chief Minister.

He said the current crisis in Garo Hills is unprecedented while the officials were following laid down guidelines. He assured that all help would be provided to them and, even if there was no such provision under the current schemes, he would make special arrangements at this personal level to support the affected victims.

Bailey bridges to replace wooden bridges

Elsewhere, the Chief Minister assessed the damage caused by the flood in which a number of wooden bridges have been washed away. These bridges were the only connectivity for the local residents to the outside world.

Sangma said the district administration is already working on building these bridges on a priority and most of these wooden bridges would be replaced with RCC or Bailey bridges.

“We will ensure these bridges are built as quickly as possible and these wooden bridges would be replaced with new RCC bridges or Bailey bridges,” Sangma said.
