Shillong, July 24: Language is indeed a “queer” thing and who would better understand it than The Queer Muslim Project, which speaks for the underrepresented voices of the LGBTQIA+ community.

The Queer Muslim Project (TQMP) has won the Digital Deal Award 2024, conferred by Ars Electronica Linz GmbH, Austria. “I am beyond thrilled and honoured,” Rafiul Alom Rahman, founder of TQMP from Meghalaya, said.

Rahman has given a “special shoutout” to his teammates Rachita Sai Barak and Maniza Khalid for making the work “fun and magical”.

Ars Electronica organises an annual festival titled “Art, Technology and Society” in Linz, Austria to discuss the digital revolution across the globe in which TQMP won the award.

According to Rahman, TQMP’s mission is to provide a platform for queer and diverse voices to be heard through art, culture and digital media.

Rahman and his team challenge harmful stereotypes and increase visibility for queer and diverse identities through poetry, scriptwriting or just plain storytelling in the digital and cultural world.

TQMP is now one of the leading forces in Asia’s LGBTQIA+ community and connects over 70,000 individuals globally.

“Some of our projects include Language is a Queer Thing, an international poetry exchange program supported by the British Council and the QueerFrames Screenwriting Lab funded by Netflix,” Rahman informed.

TQMP provides tools, resources and networks for the underrepresented viewpoints and perspectives and helps raise social awareness and challenge negative stereotypes and norms, Rahman added.
