Tura, Nov 17: Meghalaya’s Garo Hills, an area recognised for its natural beauty, climate, and fertile soil supporting a variety of fruit and crop cultivation, is now facing environmental threat.
Some farmers in the region is seeking shortcuts, resort to using glyphosate-a widely used herbicide putting the soil’s health at risk for generations to come despite stringent restrictions set by the Union Agriculture Ministry .
It has been found that street vendors are selling glyphosate on the main footpath at Tura bazar, near Sundare Complex without any hesitation, right under the noses of district authorities raising serious concern.
Also, this dangerous practice is not only confined to rural markets but has infiltrated the core of Tura, posing a direct threat to the heart of Garo Hills. Despite explicit regulations, traders continue to openly circulate this harmful substance, endangering both the environment and the agricultural richness that defines the region.
It must be noted that in October 2022, the Central Government had banned the use of the herbicide Glyphosate directly by farmers stating the effect of glyphosate on the health of humans and animals. According to the released notification, Glyphosate is now permitted only for use by Pest Control Operators (PCOs) for controlled spraying in farmers’ fields.
