Garo Hills faithful observe Maundy Thursday with solemnity and reflection

Must read

Tura, April 17: Thousands of Christian faithful across the Garo Hills came together on Thursday to solemnly observe Maundy Thursday or the Holy Thursday, commemorating the Last Supper of Jesus Christ with his disciples, a sacred moment marking the beginning of the Easter Triduum.

Churches in Tura, Williamnagar, Baghmara, and surrounding villages were filled with congregants as priests, pastors, and reverends led the faithful in special evening services. Central to the observance was the symbolic reenactment of Jesus washing the feet of his disciples, a profound act of humility and service.

In Tura, Bishop Andrew R. Marak led the traditional feet-washing ceremony at the Cathedral Church, while Auxiliary Bishop C. J. Jose conducted the same at St. Luke Church in Walbakgre. Both leaders underscored the deeper meaning of Maundy Thursday, with Bishop Jose explaining, “Maundy comes from the Latin word ‘mandatum’ which means commandment, the commandment of love. Imitate the Lord in service. For followers of Christ authority is service.”

Throughout the Garo Hills, from urban churches to rural parishes in places like Chokpot and Resubelpara, services were held through the evening to mark the holy day. In many villages, services were held in modest church settings, where traditional Garo hymns were blended with Christian liturgy, creating a powerful communal experience.

At the Sacred Heart Shrine in Tura, thousands attended the special evening service, while a similar turnout was witnessed at the Tura Baptist Church and other Christian denominations in the region.

Observing the Last Supper of Christ, Catholics took the Holy Communion, instituted by Jesus during the Last Supper, a crucial part of Christianity with believers partaking in bread and wine as symbols of Christ’s body and blood. For many Catholics, Maundy Thursday marks the beginning of a night vigil that continues into Good Friday, a period of prayer, fasting, and remembrance of Christ’s suffering and crucifixion.

Bishop Jose emphasized the importance of this day, stating, “Maundy Thursday reminds us of Christ’s command to love and serve one another. In Garo Hills, we come together as a community to reflect on this message.”

The observance across Garo Hills reflected not just deep religious devotion but also the unity and simplicity with which communities embrace the spirit of Easter.
