Garo Hills groups demand Autonomous Council for Garos of Assam

Tura, Aug 17: Leaders from various groups of Garo Hills districts have formed the All Garo Hills Joint Action Committee (AGHJaC) and held parlays with Assam’s Garo leader and Deputy Speaker of Assam Assembly Dr. Numal Momin, to submit a Memorandum demanding the creation of a Garo Autonomous Council in place of a Development Council and discusses the needs of job reservations for the Garo’s residing in the state of Assam, which has a population of more than 8 lakhs.

All Garo Hills Joint Action Committee (AGHJAC), H. Q. Tura had met Dr. Numal Momin, Deputy Speaker of Assam Legislative Assembly at his official residence in Guwahati to submit the memo.

Leaders of the Garo Hills who met with Dr Momin were Roger Benny A. Sangma, Adviser, AGHJAC and former President of Delhi A’Chik Youth Association, Balkarin Ch. Marak, Convenor, AGHJAC, Saljrang Tengrik R. Marak, President, GSU, Eastern Zone William Nagar, Zikko Balgra N. Marak, President, GSU, H. Q. Tura, Ryan Ch. Marak, Chairman, Garoland State Movement Committee (GSMC), Garobada Unit. H. Q. Tura, Walseng N. Sangma, General Secretary, GSU, North Garo Hills, Resubelpara, Jagir M. Sangma, President, FAF, North Garo Hills, Resu, Tengsan M. Marak, President, GSU, Western Zone, Dadeng, Kengkrong B. Sangma, General Secretary, GSU, Chibinang Unit.

In a discussion with Dr. Numal Momin the delegation of AGHJAC raise the pertinent issues related to the people of Garo’s in Assam to create Garo Autonomous Council (GAC) for the residence of Garo Community in Assam. Dr. Numal Momin the lone Garo MLA of Assam responded positively and said that Garo’s in Assam should get Satellites basis of Garo Autonomous Council (GAC), which will cover all the Garo villages of Assam to develop whole of residents of Garos in Assam and further continued that he is very much concern about his own Garo Tribe assuring to work for their upliftment.

Another discussion with the Deputy Speaker of Assam was on ways to solve the border issues relating to Garo villages to which he assured to take the issue to a high level talks in the status of chief minister discussions.

Another point raised by the Adviser of AGHJAC Roger Benny A Sangma and Convener Balkarin Ch Marak was about the Job Reservations especially for Garo’s, because although the Job Reservations is there presently for Hills and Plain Tribes but the delegation demanded special recognition and previlige to the deprived Garo community in every spheres which has been neglected for ages.

The meeting ended with a positive notes and believe that truth will prevail and the plight of Garo’s in Assam will come to a light and the present Government will look into it with utmost sincerity and dedication.
