Shillong, March 19: Following the public outrage over demolition of the cenotaph of Garo Labour Corps, a symbol of Garos history of perseverance, bravery and sacrifice, Chairman of the Tura Municipal Board (TMB), Dr. J.D. Sangma has clarified that the ‘redevelopment’ of the cenotaph is to create a better infrastructure so that the Garo Labour Corps Day can take place in a befitting manner.

He also clarified that no restaurant would be established on the site. Rather, a sitting arena for visitors would be constructed.

Earlier in the day, the West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner, Jagdish Chelani, held a meeting with the members of the Joint NGOs Forum, Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), and social activists. They had raised strong objections to the demolition of the historic site without consulting them.

Earlier, they were told that the site would be renovated. Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma had announced the renovation project in May 2024 at a cost of Rs 2 crore.

The meeting was a positive one with many of the misconceptions cleared. Following the meeting, the work at the site has been stopped. The CSOs have also been assured that they would be consulted before moving ahead with any further work.
