Shillong, April 28: The Post Graduate Students’ Union (PGSU), Gauhati University, has expressed deep shock and dismay over the recent assault of Dr. Alok Singh, an Assistant Professor in the Hindi Department of North Eastern Hill University (NEHU), in his office.
Dr. Alok Singh has filed an FIR in this matter and accused NEHU Students’ Union (NEHUSU) president, Sandy Sohtun, and five other members of the student body for the assault that took place on April 24, 2025, at 4:45 PM.

In a statement, PGSU expressed its respect for the teaching fraternity for their selfless service to the nation through student upliftment. The union also noted the recent protests in the university and NEHUSU’s control over the university’s gates and administrative affairs.
“PGSU has been closely observing the developments, protests, and agitations at NEHU, particularly during the crucial phase of implementing the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. We empathize with the students and are concerned about the security situation on campus, given the NEHUSU’s control over entrance gates and interference in day-to-day administration,” PGSU said in the statement.

It also criticized the lack of accountability following the vandalism of the NEHU Vice-Chancellor’s official residence on November 11, 2024.
Calling for immediate legal action under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) against those responsible, PGSU warned that failure to act could force it to take further steps to safeguard the academic environment. The union stressed that while peaceful protest and democratic engagement are essential in a university setting, criminal activities and acts of vandalism must not be tolerated.
“PGSU demands immediate action against those involved, prosecution under the BNS, and proper punishment to ensure that such incidents are not repeated. If timely action is not taken, PGSU will be forced to intervene and take appropriate action to secure the education system. We believe that peaceful advocacy and democratic representation are essential, and there is no room for criminal actions and vandalism,” it said.
It further sought the intervention of responsible persons and immediate steps from the government to restore normalcy, ensuring the proper implementation of NEP 2020. “We stand for justice, swift action against perpetrators, and uplifting the quality of education with a focus on morals and ethics, free from regional bias or communal fear,” it added.
