Ampati, June 7: Mahendraganj legislator Sanjay A. Sangma inaugurated the Ghegapara Urban Health & Wellness Centre in Mahendraganj on Wednesday. The new Urban Health & Wellness Centre has been established under Mahendraganj CHC, South West Garo Hills.

Sangma was accompanied by MDC Aktar Ali for the inauguration ceremony.

Speaking to the occasion, the Mahendraganj MLA expressed his gratitude towards Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma for granting the first-ever Urban Health & Wellness Centre (UHWC) in the state to his constituency.

According to him, this centre holds great significance as it serves a densely populated area. He believes that the wellness centre will effectively cater to the healthcare needs of the local residents in Mahendraganj.

He also mentioned that the MCH hospital is being constructed near Kentrikona to improve access to health. He will also be giving proposals to the health department for additional sub-centres where it is required.

He emphasized that since the government is giving such provisions, people should take it as their own and use it as it is for their welfare.

Earlier in the programme, Dr. Himangsu Barman, while delivering the welcome address, shed light on the motives behind the establishment of the centre.

He emphasized the centre’s primary focus on catering to the needs of the local community, especially expecting mothers in need of delivery services. He also highlighted the centre’s aim to achieve 100 percent immunization coverage and reduce the infant mortality rate in the surrounding villages. In addition, Dr. Barman urged MLA Sanjay A Sangma to allocate resources for an ambulance service at the urban centre to ensure prompt medical assistance in emergencies.

Following Dr. Barman’s address, MDC Aktar Ali expressed his gratitude to Sanjay Sangma for his instrumental role in sanctioning the establishment of the Urban Health & Wellness Centre. Ali acknowledged that the centre’s presence would greatly benefit the people of the area by providing accessible healthcare services.

Ghegapara Urban Health and Wellness Centre has been sanctioned under 15th Finance Commission. South West Garo Hills has been allotted 5 Urban Health & Wellness Centres which will also be functional in the days to come.

The DMHO informed that the Urban HWC would have a medical officer and staff nurse and ANM. Services of ANC, immunization, screening and treatment of NCDs would also be available in the Centre and will run as an OPD clinic only for now. Teleconsultation with specialists will also be available. The Centre will soon be adding labour room also so that deliveries can be conducted in the Centre.
