Governor highlights Meghalaya’s matrilineal legacy, calls for united action on social challenges

Shillong, Jan 18: Meghalaya Governor CH Vijayashankar on Saturday underscored the vital role of the state’s matrilineal system, which forms the backbone of the Khasi, Jaintia, and Garo societies.

Addressing the Public Empowerment Assembly, Ka Dorbar Iktiar Paidbah, organized by the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC), he emphasized the need to preserve Meghalaya’s unique cultural heritage while embracing progress and modernization.

“The identity of Meghalaya is tied to its matrilineal system, the foundation of our Khasi, Jaintia, and Garo societies. It ensures the continuity of our rich traditions. I appeal to every citizen to cherish and protect our social heritage,” said the Governor.

The event, attended by Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong, KHADC Chairman P.N. Syiem, Chief Executive Member Pyniaid S. Syiem, and other dignitaries, highlighted Meghalaya’s rich traditions and grassroots governance.

Governor Vijayashankar expressed his honour in participating in the assembly, describing it as a reflection of shared commitment to the progress and well-being of Meghalaya’s communities. He reiterated the significance of the state’s matrilineal system, which honours mothers and women as custodians of tradition, and appealed to all citizens to cherish and protect their social heritage and customs.

He commended the recent amendments to the Khasi Hills Autonomous District (Administration of Elaka) Act, 2023, and the Khasi Hills Autonomous District (Khasi Social Custom of Lineage) Amendment Act, 2023. These legislative updates, he noted, empower grassroots institutions such as Rangbah Shnong, Seng Kynthei, Seng Samla, and Rangbah Kurs, further strengthening the state’s traditional governance framework.

Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong on Saturday said the functioning of the  Autonomous District Councils (ADCs) has improved to a great extent following the coming to power of the NPP-led MDA government since 2018.

He stressed the unique responsibilities entrusted to Autonomous District Councils (ADCs) under the Sixth Schedule of the Indian Constitution and urged harmonious collaboration between ADC leaders and the State Government to ensure balanced development.

The Governor administered a pledge during the event, with all dignitaries and attendees committing to uphold the spirit of Meghalaya and work collectively to address social challenges, including drug abuse.

The Governor highlighted education and youth empowerment as critical priorities. He called for intensified efforts to reduce dropout rates, particularly among girls, and emphasized the importance of skill development and higher education.

He emphasized that collective efforts would ensure Meghalaya’s future as a beacon of inclusive development and cultural pride.
