Govs, CMs leaders, people of all professions in NE join 9th International yoga day

Shillong, June 21: Governors, Chief Ministers, many important personalities, senior Army and security and other officials and people from all walks of life performed Yoga in most of the northeastern states, except violence hit Manipur, on the occasion of the 9th International Yoga Day on Wednesday.

In Manipur, International Yoga Day was very low-key with some ministers and security officials performing Yoga inside their homes and complexes.

As Manipur continues to reel under the present ethnic turmoil, yoga practitioners in Imphal under the banner of the All Manipur Yoga Fraternity Union have decided not to observe the day, instead, they observed mourning for the victims of the violence.

Protesting Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s silence over Manipur violence a large number of people held a sit-in protest at Thoubal fair ground on the occasion of International Yoga day, shouted slogans and burnt Modi’s effigies.

Rizorio Okram, one of the protesters, said that the Prime minister is preaching the message of peace and harmony in the world while conveniently ignoring the fact that a part of his own country is burning for the last 50 days.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma accompanied by his cabinet colleagues attended a Yoga programme at Dhubri. MLAs, senior officials and hundreds of people participated in the Yoga session.

After participating in the yoga session in Itanagar, Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu tweeted : “Yoga cultivates the ways of maintaining a balanced attitude in day-to-day life and endows skill in the performance of one’s actions ~ B K S Iyengar Let’s make Yoga a way of life to stay fit and give our best to build a happier and healthier society. Heartiest greetings and wishes of International Yoga Day to the lovely people of Arunachal Pradesh.”

Accompanied by ministers, leaders and officials, Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha also took part in a Yoga session in Agartala.

Saha later tweeted : “Yoga is rooted in ancient Indian tradition. It keeps our body & mind healthy.

Attended the state-level Yoga session at the international exhibition hall, Hapania on the occasion of International Yoga Day. This year, the theme for International Yoga Day is “Yoga for Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam” which reflects the Hon’ble PM Shri Narendra Modi Ji’s vision for wellness of the people across the world as one family.”

Defence, para-miliatry, security, civil officials and personnel and their families besides people from all walks of life also participated in yoga sessions organised at hundreds of locations in the eight northeastern states.

An Army tweet said : “Warriors celebrate International Yoga Day 2023 in the historic battlefields of Arunachal Pradesh & amidst picturesque landscape in Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura & Assam. Let’s promote the benefits of yoga & its impact on physical & mental health.”

Students of different educational institutions including private schools also attended yoga sessions across the region and participated in numerous events including poster-making competitions to celebrate the occasion.

The event witnessed excitement, fun and wholehearted participation by students, teachers and non-teaching staff.
