Shillong, Aug 10: The effective curbing of influx necessitates a resolute approach from government institutions, even with the Inner Line Permit (ILP) in place, asserted Saleng A. Sangma, Gambegre MLA and the Opposition Chief Whip in the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly.
Talking to reporters here on Thursday, Sangma highlighted concerns regarding the performance of officials stationed at the ‘Entry and Exit Point’ in Bynrihat, Ri Bhoi. He lamented the lack of seriousness exhibited by these officials in executing their duties related to influx checks.
Sangma underscored that despite the establishment of an Entry and Exit Point in Byrnihat, the efficacy of the influx control measure is compromised by the absence of thorough checks, particularly during evening hours.
“This lackadaisical approach towards influx checks reflects the root cause of the issue. Even with the implementation of the ILP, the situation is unlikely to change if the responsible officials do not demonstrate a heightened sense of duty,” Sangma argued.
Expressing his concerns further, Sangma urged government officials tasked with influx checks to demonstrate greater diligence in their roles. He highlighted the importance of institutional discipline and its impact on curbing influx effectively. “How can we expect to effectively combat influx when the very departments and institutions responsible for the task are themselves not adhering to discipline?” Sangma questioned.
Talking on another issue of importance – the ‘illegal’ hawkers in and around the city, Sangma observed that these vendors were absent in the city’s landscape a few years ago, yet have now proliferated across different locations.
He called upon local Dorbars to actively monitor their respective areas and vigilantly assess newcomers. He asserted that a collective sense of responsibility among citizens is vital to counter illegal infiltration effectively.
