Shillong, April 19: The Meghalaya government is stepping up efforts to engage with local stakeholders and enhance security in Tolegre, South Garo Hills, following the theft of a rare fossil estimated to be 35-40 million years old.
A team from the Geological Survey of India (GSI) is currently conducting research at the site, which may hold many more significant fossils. The state government is considering the construction of a museum to protect and showcase these findings.

Cabinet Minister and Rongra-Siju MLA Rakkam A Sangma said, “The GSI team is on the ground, conducting research and identifying not just one, but several fossils. The government had plans to set up a museum. Something needs to be done. I will personally visit the site and speak with stakeholders.”
The fossil was reportedly stolen earlier this year when unknown individuals broke into the area and excavated an entire section.
When asked about the status of the investigation, Sangma said, “The police are working on the case, and we are awaiting their report.”
