Must read

Shillong, Nov 24: Deputy Chief Minister in-charge District Council Affairs Prestone Tynsong on Friday said the government has asked both Autonomous District Councils (ADCs) in Khasi and Jaintia Hills region to complete the delimitation process at the earliest possible.

Speaking to reporters, Tynsong said that recently the Governor had constituted the delimitation committees of the two ADCs – Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council and Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council.

“Now, they are on the job to organize the constituencies. The state government has also directed them to speed it up so that next election meaning not the old constituencies but the new constituencies will be in place,” he said.

The deputy CM however said delimitation does not mean that the seats of the two ADCs will be increased because “this is a constitutional obligation”.

“As of now, the two ADCs want to carry out delimitation as there are constituencies which are bigger than MLA constituencies. Therefore, we also insist that they complete the process at the earliest possible,” he said.

On the issue of illegal check gates, Tynsong said the government has already stopped all such gates across the state.

“We have instructed ADCs and DCs that any illegal check gate please close it so they have done it,” he added.
