Tura, May 2: The Garo Students’ Union (GSU) and the A’chik Youth Welfare Organisation (AYWO) have demanded black listing of the construction firm M/S MP Agarwalla from Guwahati from taking any further construction projects in the region due to the substandard quality of its work, especially the ongoing renovation and repair work on AMPT Road in Phulbari area.

In a joint letter to Deputy Commissioner of West Garo Hills, GSU’s Phulbari Unit president, Nyezer Chuang R. Marak, and AYWO’s Phulbari Unit’s president, Dalseng M. Sangma, expressed their deep dissatisfaction and concern over the substandard quality of work, which they claimed is a complete disaster.

They pointed out that the AMPT Road, which is an inter-state NEC road, is the lifeline for the people of Phulbari and adjoining areas, and is not only crucial for economic activities but is used by many school and college students. However, due to the poor execution of the repairing work by M/S MP Agarwalla, the road has become worse than ever before. It is filled with potholes and cracks, making it difficult for commuters and locals to navigate safely, and causing damage to commercial vehicles and putting the safety of passengers at risk.

With the monsoon season fast approaching, the poor maintenance of the road will add to the nightmare faced by school and college students, who already suffer immensely during rainy seasons, they added. They further said the poorly maintained road is also affecting commercial vehicle owners who operate in the area, damaging their vehicles and putting the safety of passengers at risk. In addition, the poor quality of the road could lead to an unnecessary hike in the prices of essential commodities, impacting innocent people.

They also stated that M/S Agarwalla from Guwahati has been the subject of many complaints about substandard construction in other areas of Garo Hills, including the PMGSY.

The GSU and AYWO Phulbari branch have requested that the Deputy Commissioner take immediate action against the contractor and recommend blacklisting the firm from further construction projects in the region.
