Tura, Oct 17: In continuation with their ‘fight’ against timber smuggling in Garo Hills region of Meghalaya, a vigilant GSU – Western Zone (South) Ampati and GSU – Zikzak Unit caught loaded logs at Garo Hills’s Zikzak area in the wee hours of Friday. In a joint press statement by the units of GSU on October 15 2021, they informed that the vehicle (Mahindra Pik-up) bearing registration no ML08 A 2011 was allegedly being used by timber smugglers in the area. However, all the occupants of the vehicle took flight when they saw the members of the Union approach. Infact, the driver and helper of the vehicle managed to escape abandoning the vehicle. Although, later, the seized vehicle along with 17 loaded timbers was handed over to the State Divisional Forest Office (DFO), Tura.

The incident apparently took place at about 3 am – 4 am when the team saw the vehicle moving suspiciously. When they saw logs at the back of the vehicle, they immediately informed the police before seizing it.

Angered at the continued smuggling of timber despite the presence of Forest and police authorities, the members have urged and appealed to take strict action against the timber smugglers before Garo Hills become completely denuded.
