Shillong, March 20: TMC leader Mukul Sangma on Monday said the decision of the Voice of the People Party (VPP) to walk out of the Assembly session during the Governor’s speech on Monday was a clear expression of sentiment.

The four legislators of the opposition VPP staged a walkout in protest against the Governor Phagu Chauhan for addressing the House in Hindi on the first day of the Budget Session on Monday.

According to Sangma, different political parties have their unique ways of dealing with issues in a manner that aligns with the aspirations of the people they represent, and VPP did that by staging a walk out when the Governor continued to speak in Hindi despite the VPP wanting him to speak in English.

Speaking to reporters, Sangma emphasized the importance of acknowledging the vast diversity present in India, which includes differences in language, culture, and religion. He believes that it is crucial to appreciate and respect these differences in order to work together effectively as a nation.

When asked about the TMC and Congress writing to the Speaker to give them the post of the Leader of Opposition, Sangma stated that the issue was not about who holds the position but rather about enabling themselves to fulfill their responsibilities in and outside the House, in line with the conventions and practices of the Assembly.

He further added that the opposition parties in the Assembly had yet to hold a meeting, where several decisions would be made based on the collective wisdom of all concerned. He also touched on the ongoing demand for the inclusion of the Khasi and Garo languages in the Indian Constitution, stating that the fight for their recognition was still ongoing until the demand was met.
