Guwahati, May 12: In a significant crackdown, Guwahati City Police have arrested a gang of burglars that had been active in the city for the past five years. The gang leader, Chiraj Ali (42), was arrested near Hatigaon Jame Masjid, leading to the recovery of stolen valuables and the apprehension of several gang members.
Chiraj Ali confessed to committing burglaries in various parts of Guwahati and revealed the names of his gang members and the recipients of stolen gold, diamond ornaments, and other valuables. Based on his lead, the police arrested two receivers, Md. Jul Hash Ali (37) and Md. Sajidul Islam (38), on the night of May 5. The police recovered Rs. 71,000, two gold bangles, and a pair of bronze anklets from Jul Hash Aliโs possession.
Further interrogation led to the apprehension of two more gang members, Md. Dilwar Ali (25) and Md. Chabitulla Ali (45).
A Police official informed that the gangโs modus operandi involved targeting houses with lights off and doors locked from the outside, indicating the ownersโ absence. They would break door locks or window grills to gain entry and commit the burglaries late at night or midnight.
All the accused have been arrested and produced before the Honโble Court. The police are investigating further to ascertain the gangโs involvement in other burglary cases and recover more stolen articles.
