GUWAHATI, Feb 10: The Guwahati police on Monday registered an FIR against five YouTubers and social influencers, accusing them of promoting obscene and sexually explicit content during their appearance on the controversial show India’s Got Latent.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma took to X to announce the development, stating, “Today @GuwahatiPol has registered an FIR against certain YouTubers and social influencers, namely Shri Ashish Chanchlani, Shri Jaspreet Singh, Shri Apoorva Makhija, Shri Ranveer Allahbadia, Shri Samay Raina, and others for promoting obscenity and engaging in sexually explicit and vulgar discussions in a show titled India’s Got Latent.”
The FIR, registered as Cyber PS Case No. 03/2025, invokes multiple sections, including 79, 95, 294, and 296 of the BNS 2023, along with Section 67 of the IT Act, 2000; Sections 4 and 7 of the Cinematograph Act, 1952; and Sections 4 and 6 of the Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act, 1986.
The legal action follows widespread public outrage, particularly over an offensive question posed by Ranveer Allahbadia to a contestant, involving their parents. The remark was deemed vulgar and inappropriate, triggering criticism from various quarters.
In response to the backlash, Allahbadia issued a video apology, admitting that the comment was neither appropriate nor humorous.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis also condemned the incident, stressing that while freedom of speech is important, it comes with boundaries that must be respected.
