Shillong, May 1: Heavy rain accompanied by hailstorm lashed parts of West Khasi Hills District on Thursday morning, causing extensive damage to houses and farmlands.
The storm, which occurred between 10:00 AM and 10:30 AM, left residents reeling from its sudden impact.
The worst-affected villages include – Mawkohmit, Mawblei, Rikhen, Thangmaw and Nongrang.

Locals reported that hailstones as large as marbles and even bigger in some areas. Over hundreds of houses with CGI roofing were damaged,forcing many families to seek shelter with relatives and neighbours.
The hailstorm also devastated agricultural fields, dealing a severe blow to local farmers. Crops such as beans, maize, chillies and various fruit trees were ruined within minutes, leaving many heartbroken at the loss of months of hard work.
Mawthadraishan MDC, Powell Sohkhlet, visited the affected villages to assess the situation and meet with the victims and community leaders. He has informed the Block Development Officer (BDO) of Mairang and urged immediate deployment of officials to conduct damage assessments and expedite relief measures for those affected.
