Handcrafted Hope: Dibrugarh’s Potters Illuminate Diwali with Tradition Amidst Market Flood of Artificial Lights

Must read

Dibrugarh, Oct 27: A diya not only illuminates homes but also the legacy of a craft, feels potters like Ratan Pandit.

The market has been flooded with Chinese lights, but customers still value the diya tradition, says Ratan Pandit, a 30-year-old third-generation potter in Dibrugarh.

As Diwali approaches, the pottery industry in Dibrugarh is alive with energy, with local artisans pouring dedication into creating earthen diyas, the traditional lamps that have lit up homes during the festival of lights for generations. Despite a flood of artificial lights in the market, the demand for these handcrafted pieces remains strong, bringing both pride and business to local potters.

Ratan Pandit, a 30-year-old third-generation potter, is among those carrying forward this age-old craft at his family’s humble workshop in Kachari Ghat, Dibrugarh. After completing his higher secondary education at DHSK College, Pandit chose to keep his family tradition alive rather than seek out a different career path. The choice, he says, wasn’t just about following in his ancestors’ footsteps; it was about preserving a craft that holds cultural significance.

“This year has been better, with more people coming to buy diyas,” Pandit shared. “Our work faced delays due to rain, but with the weather now clear, we’re back on track. They know its significance during Diwali.”

Pandit’s sentiments resonate with many locals, including Josohoda Khemani, a customer who believes in supporting local artisans. “Everyone buys diyas for Diwali, but coming here and purchasing directly from the potters helps them. It also lets us add a personal touch by painting them ourselves,” she said. “While fancy, colorful lights are everywhere, the essence of Diwali lies in the simple glow of a diya.”

Diwali is a time when families come together, homes are adorned with lights, and traditions shine brighter than ever. For artisans like Ratan Pandit, every diya they create illuminates not only homes but also the legacy of a craft that brings joy and tradition to the heart of Dibrugarh.
