Harding Trust seeks operationalization of Edenbari Residential School in West Garo Hills

Tura, July 12: In an effort to address the educational needs of the Edenbari region in Tura, the Harding Universal Trust met with Education Minister Rakkam A Sangma and representatives of the Education Department on Friday to operationalize the Residential School of Edenbari, Tura, West Garo Hills.

The proposal for the residential school, initially submitted to the previous government, outlined the establishment of an institution catering to students from classes VI to XII. Despite several proposals put forward by the Harding Universal Trust, the state government is yet to make a decision.

Villagers from the surrounding areas also took part in the meeting, highlighting the community’s need in the school’s operationalization. The Trust proposed a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model as a potential solution.

Education Minister Rakkam Sangma responded positively to many points raised during the discussions and also gave several suggestions to move the project forward. He assured attendees that further meetings would be conducted with the Chief Minister and the Speaker of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly to expedite the decision-making process.

Key officials present at the meeting included Rongram Block BDO Cherimi W R Sangma, SDEO WGH RTK Sangma, and Chairman of Harding Universal Trust B B Sangma. Other notable attendees were Dr. Imnanungshi Imsong, Principal of Harding Theological College, JD Sangma, a member of HUT, Secretary of Harding Universal Trust Aculand B Marak, and representatives from Edenbari village.

The issue of abandoned residential schools in Meghalaya has been a point of contention since the program’s inception in 2014. Approximately 29 schools were constructed across the state but remained non-operational due to governmental neglect.

The Harding Trust’s has come forward to run the school following the completion of the construction of the school building.
