Harijan Colony relocation meeting remains inconclusive

Must read

Shillong, April 29: A high-level meeting convened to discuss the long-pending relocation of residents from the Harijan Colony ended without resolution on Monday.

Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong, who also holds the Home (Police) portfolio, told reporters that the discussions were inconclusive. However, the government is actively pursuing alternative land options, including a defence area under consideration for the relocation.

“We discussed about this issue also and now we are still awaiting the communication from the Government of India through the Defence Ministry. The letter has been sent to the Ministry and we are yet to receive the communication,” Tynsong said.

The state government has formally requested the Centre to allocate an unused portion of defence land for the purpose. “We had requested the Centre through the Defence Ministry if they can provide us that space that is lying unutilised in the defence area — nothing like it,” he added.

Providing an update, Tynsong said the Commissioner and Secretary of Urban Affairs, Dr. Vijay Kumar, is currently in contact with the Ministry of Defence. “Hopefully, we will be able to get the communication very soon,” he noted.

The meeting was attended by the Director General of Police, the Chief Secretary, Urban Affairs Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar, and other senior officials from departments involved in addressing the relocation matter.
