Guwahati, Jan 28: Assam’s Director General of Civil Defence and Commandant General of Home Guards, Harmeet Singh, has been named the acting Director General of Police (DGP) of Assam Police.
This transition follows the departure of incumbent DGP Gyanendra Pratap Singh, who is set to assume the role of Director General of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF).
An official order from Assam’s Home Department confirmed that Harmeet Singh will take on the additional responsibilities temporarily, pending the appointment of a permanent DGP or further directives. Singh, a 1992-batch IPS officer of the Assam-Meghalaya cadre, currently serves as Special DGP (Headquarters) and Special DGP (Border).
The move comes after the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) approved the central deputation of Gyanendra Pratap Singh (GP Singh), a 1991-batch IPS officer from the same cadre, to lead the CRPF until his superannuation on November 30, 2027. GP Singh, who was appointed Assam DGP on January 31, 2023, will succeed CRPF Special DG Vipul Kumar.
GP Singh, known locally as “Gun Point Singh” for his stringent stance against insurgents, previously held key roles including Inspector General at the National Investigation Agency (NIA) and DIG of Assam Police’s Central-Western Range. He also served with the elite Special Protection Group (SPG) and was repatriated to Assam in 2023 at the state government’s request. His tenure in Jorhat district during the 1990s and his reputation for operational rigor have marked his career in counter-insurgency and security leadership.
Officials confirmed that GP Singh will formally assume his CRPF role after handing over charge in Assam.
