He had put a condition: BJP’s Ernest Mawrie on HM Shangpliang’s nepotism allegations

Must read

Shillong, Sept 6: Ernest Mawrie has strongly reacted against HM Shangpliang’s nepotism allegations against the state BJP president, which is the reason behind his leaving the party ahead of the Lok Sabha Election.

BJP State President Ernest Mawrie said that it was Shangpliang who was practising nepotism by requesting the party to appoint his brother in Mawsynram Mondal.

Denying any internal conflict, Mawrie said that he, as the president of the BJP Meghalaya, cannot decide on anything and that he follows the directives of the central leadership on policy matters.

He also opened up about how the former Mawsynram MLA had approached him about contesting the Lok Sabha Elections 2024 and had put a condition on Mawrie to call on the alliance partners and ask them to put up a common candidate.

HM Shangpliang’s Resignation

HM Shangpliang submitted his resignation on Wednesday (September 6), citing nepotism under the leadership of Ernest Mawrie.

In his resignation letter submitted to Mawrie, Shangpliang said, “…though I would have liked to remain and serve the party in the right earnest, I understand that as long as nepotism prevails within the rank and file of the State BJP continues under the leadership of the State president, it will hinder all possible steps of the dedicated and loyal party men to freely exercise their minds and grow in the party.”

“And, therefore, I tender my resignation from the primary membership of the BJP in the State of Meghalaya forthwith on personal grounds,” he added.

“However, there are various issues that I had repeatedly raised to the State President which are pertinent to the growth of the party in Meghalaya particularly in the rural areas and had suggested steps to be taken, keeping in mind of the poll debacle the party faced in the recently concluded polls in Meghalaya,” he said while adding that “I had reminded the State President several times on the necessary action proposed to be taken to strengthen the party at various levels in view of the growing internal conflicts within the party in the State.

In the resignation letter he also thanked the party and senior leaders including Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, John Barla, Union Minister Minorty Affairs, Rituraj Sinha in-charge of Meghalaya and others for their kind support given to him during the Assembly election.
