Guwahati, Feb 10: In a significant push towards modernizing rural power distribution, village headmen, or Gaonburhas, have stepped in to support the installation of smart meters across villages in Assam.
Public representatives are also being roped in to create awareness and dispel misinformation surrounding the new technology.
The initiative, led by power distribution authorities, aims to educate villagers about the benefits of smart meters, ensuring accurate billing, real-time energy monitoring, and improved electricity management.
Field engineers have been directed to collaborate with local leaders to build confidence in the new system.
Early adoption by Gaonburhas has already begun shifting public perception.
Several village headmen have installed smart meters in their own homes, demonstrating their safety and efficiency. One such example is Moinul Haque, the Gaonburha of Dolaitola in Kamrup district, who recently embraced the technology.
His move has set a strong precedent, encouraging villagers to follow suit.
“Smart meters are a step forward in making our electricity consumption more efficient and transparent,” Haque stated.
He urged all residents of Hajo and beyond to adopt this technology for better energy management and the progress of community.”
The smart metering initiative aligns with India’s vision of digital empowerment and sustainable energy consumption. Officials believe this grassroots movement will accelerate the shift towards reliable, waste-free power distribution, encouraging more households and businesses to adopt smart meters in the coming months.
