According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), a trough of low pressure stretching from central Uttar Pradesh to North Bangladesh, combined with a cyclonic circulation over central Assam, is set to trigger heavy showers and stormy conditions. Light to moderate rain is expected at most places, with isolated areas bracing for heavy rainfall accompanied by hail, lightning, and gusty winds reaching speeds of 60 to 70 kmph.

Districts on Alert
Barpeta, Bongaigaon, Bajali, Nalbari, Jorhat, Sivasagar, and Charaideo will also face thunderstorms and lightning, while urban centers such as Kamrup Metro and Karbi Anglong may see strong winds at 30 to 40 kmph.
Over the following days, Dima Hasao, Cachar, Hailakandi, and Sribhumi districts are forecast to be heavily impacted, especially on April 28 and 29, with gusty winds up to 70 kmph and possible flash floods.

The IMD has warned of several disruptions, including poor visibility causing traffic congestion, waterlogging and uprooted trees leading to road blockages, disruptions in ferry services due to strong winds, Damage to kutcha houses, standing crops, and vegetable farms, and landslides in hilly areas such as West Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao. Threats to human and cattle safety due to lightning strikes in open areas are also there.
Residents are advised to follow traffic advisories, avoid low-lying flood-prone zones, stay clear of vulnerable structures, and take shelter during lightning storms. Farmers are encouraged to prepare their fields for heavy rainfall and secure vegetable crops.
The IMD has categorised the warning under its ‘Orange Alert’ for most of the affected days, urging people to “be prepared”.
