Shillong, July 3: Despite the South Garo Hills being battered by relentless heavy rainfall on July 2-3, causing multiple landslides that significantly disrupted daily life and blocked critical roadways, the swift and effective response by local authorities ensured that the roads were cleared promptly, minimizing the impact on residents.
According to the District Disaster Management Officer of South Garo Hills, Baghmara, the PWD link road from Dimapara to Ruga was blocked at Meka Adu on July 2nd. Immediate action by the Block Development Officer of Gasuapara resulted in the blockage being cleared the same day, restoring access. The PWD road from Baghmara to Chokpot faced a similar situation but was also swiftly reopened.
In another incident, a landslide blocked the PWD road from Baghmara to Moheshkola at Panda village. Authorities worked tirelessly to clear the obstruction, ensuring the road was accessible by the end of the day. The following day, July 3rd, a landslide blocked the PWD NH road at Bolsalgre near Baghmara Circuit House. Construction of a subway is currently underway in this area to prevent future disruptions.
The rapid response and coordination between the Executive Engineer PWD (R) and the Circle Inspector cum Officer in Charge of Baghmara Sadar Police Station played a crucial role in mitigating the effects of the landslides. Their efforts ensured that the impacted roads were quickly made accessible again, showcasing effective disaster management and resilience in South Garo Hills.
At the same time, the SDMA is actively monitoring the damages caused by the heavy rainfall across the state and ready to respond swiftly.
