Heavy rains trigger landslides, wash-off bridges in South Garo hills

Shillong, June 30: Heavy rains for the last two days in Garo Hills have triggered massive landslides and washed away bridges, disrupting normal lives of the residents of the region. Many important road links have been submerged and areas under the threat of flood.

Autos on the verge of toppling after a landslip from the hillside occurred on Wednesday morning in Tura during he heavy rains.

The situation is particularly bad in South Garo Hills where numerous road links have been cut off and bridges washed away. The Simsang River among many other rivers is flowing above the danger mark.

Landslide has occurred at Dobasipara tri-junction and near Dobasipara petrol pump and others places along the NH-217 connecting Tura – Dalu – Baghmara due to heavy rainfall, which is the lifeline of Garo Hills.

A bridge has been washed away at Dimapara, South Garo hills.
The roads and bridges from Rangrachi to Dasin Bibra have been submerged by the undulation.

Witnesses have informed that road communication to Ruga, Dimapara, and Siju is completely severed. Similarly, Baghmara is completely cut-off via road transport to Siju and Ruga.
