Shillong, Nov 21: Cabinet Minister and senior BJP leader, AL Hek, has expressed concerns over the prolonged delay in resuming the second phase of the Assam-Meghalaya interstate boundary discussions. Highlighting the growing unease among MLAs, Hek urged for swift action to resolve the longstanding border dispute.
“There are concerns from different MLAs and Ministers regarding this delay. We should continue discussions to resolve the border dispute in Meghalaya,” Hek stated, emphasizing the need for consistent dialogue.
Hek further remarked that resolving the boundary issue is not just a priority for the Prime Minister and the Union Home Minister but also a pressing concern for the people of Meghalaya. “On the same line, it should be resolved,” he added.
Pointing out that the Meghalaya regional committees are prepared for the next round of talks, Hek stated that the delay stems from the Assam side. “We have to keep reminding them. If our people and MLAs are already willing to resolve the issue, we will ask Assam to engage in talks immediately and work towards a solution,” he said.
The minister also informed that he plans to take up the matter with the regional committees to ensure progress.
The second phase of negotiations has been stalled for over a year, despite repeated assurances from both governments about their intent to resume discussions.
