Agartala, Jan 4: Security forces, including the Border Security Force (BSF), have been placed on high alert following reports of militant movement along the Tripura-Mizoram border with Bangladesh.
“There are reports of movement of militants along the contiguous Tripura-Mizoram-Bangladesh porous border, prompting a high alert among security forces, including the BSF deployed in the mountainous regions,” an official stated.
Tripura Inspector General of Police (Intelligence), Krishnendu Chakraborty, recently visited the Unakoti and North Tripura districts. He held several meetings with security personnel stationed in the area to strengthen surveillance and coordination.
Although a significant number of militants, primarily from Bangladesh, surrendered to the Tripura government in September last year, intelligence suggests that some extremist elements from northeast India remain in hiding across the border in Bangladesh.
The security situation intensified after political unrest erupted in Bangladesh in July, culminating in the fall of the Sheikh Hasina-led Awami League government on August 5. This led to heightened vigilance along the India-Bangladesh border to curb cross-border activities, including infiltration, militant movement, and smuggling.
Tripura shares an 856-km international border with Bangladesh, of which 26.64 km remain unfenced. Meanwhile, Mizoram’s border with Bangladesh remains entirely unfenced, posing additional challenges for border management.
