High-Stakes Robbery in North Garo Hills: Manhunt Intensifies as Two Arrested

Must read

Shillong, July 2: In a bold and brazen heist that shocked the community, four armed bandits executed a daring robbery in North Garo Hills on the evening of June 18, 2024. Riding an Aprilia Scooty (AS18J-0181) and a black Bajaj Pulsar 220 (AS18 E-7925), the masked miscreants ambushed their victims at gunpoint, seizing Rs. 80,000, personal documents, and two mobile phones.

As word spread, the vigilant villagers of Beldongpara in Goalpara, Assam, sprang into action. In a tense confrontation, they intercepted the stolen vehicles. However, the assailants managed a narrow escape, vanishing into the night. The recovered vehicles were promptly handed over to Mendipathar Police Station.

An FIR was filed on June 19, 2024, marking the beginning of Mendipathar Police Station Case No. 09(06)2024 under Section 392 IPC and Section 25(IA)(IB) of the Arms Act. In response, DySP Special Ops and his elite team launched an extensive search operation, scouring suspected hideouts in the neighboring areas of Assam.

The breakthrough came on June 24, 2024. Sunil Boro, a 33-year-old resident of Upper Borgum in Goalpara, Assam, was apprehended from Dhupdhara PS jurisdiction. The scooty used in the audacious crime was seized from his possession. Despite this victory, his accomplices, Kaltu Rabha, Turti Basumatary, and Sahadev Basumatary, remained elusive.

The manhunt intensified, culminating in a dramatic turn of events on July 1, 2024. Under mounting pressure, Turti Basumatary surrendered to North Garo Hills Police, handing over a semi-automatic pistol with two live rounds. His cooperation led to the swift capture of Sahadev Basumatary at the Assam-Meghalaya border near Tikrikilla, West Garo Hills.

The search for the remaining suspects is ongoing, with authorities determined to bring all culprits to justice. The arrested individuals are known habitual offenders, linked to multiple dacoity cases across Assam and Meghalaya.
