Guwahati, May 10: Himanta Biswa Sarma was sworn in as the new Chief Minister of Assam, along with 13 members of his cabinet, by Governor Jagdish Mukhi this afternoon.
He took the oath in presence of BJP National President J P Nadda and other top BJP leaders, including Chief Minister of Meghalaya Conrad K Sangma, Nagaland CM Neiphiu Rio, Tripura CM Biplab Deb, and a host of other dignitaries.

Seven ministers from the former chief minister’s 17-member cabinet have been retained. These include ally AGP’s Bokakhat legislator Atul Bora, Kaliabor legislator Keshab Mahanta, BJP’s Dhalai MLA Parimal Sulkabaidya, Dharmapur MLA Chandramohan Patowary, Tinsukia MLA Sanjay Kishan, Mahmara MLA Jogen Mohan and Jagiroad MLA Pijush Hazarika.

Assam BJP’s president Ranjit Dass, who had contested from Patacharkuchi constituency and won with a whopping margin of over 60 thousand votes, is among the six new leaders in Sarma’s cabinet.
Shortly after the ceremony, Sarma told the media that his newly-formed cabinet will meet tomorrow to discuss ways to curb the Covid surge in the state.
“Covid situation in Assam is alarming. We’ve seen that our daily cases have crossed almost 5,000,” he said.
“Until and unless Covid situation in Assam is controlled, the situation in the northeast will never come under control,” the newly elected CM said.
Sarma is the 15th Chief Minister of Assam.
The 13 legislators sworn in on Monday include BJP state president and Patacharkuchi MLA, Ranjeet Kumar Dass; AGP president and former minister, Atul Bora; UPPL MLA from Chapaguri, Urkhao Gwra Brahma; former minister Parimal Suklabaidya; former minister Chandra Mohan Patowary; former minister Keshab Mahanta; Dhemaji MLA Ranoj Pegu; Tinsukia MLA and former minister Sanjay Kishan; Mahmora MLA and former minister Jogen Mohan; former minister and Golaghat MLA Ajanta Neog; Dhekiajuli MLA Ashok Singhal; former minister and Jagiroad MLA Pijush Hazarika and Tingkhong MLA Bimal Bora.
