Tura, March 13: The Tura Hindu Shamshan Bhumi Committee (THSBC) on Thursday formally opened the eco-friendly crematorium at Mokshadham for the Hindu community of Tura in West Garo Hills.
The facility was inaugurated with an ‘Agni Puja’ performed during Brahma Muhurta, which was attended by community members and local leaders.
The project was initiated in 2012 with the aim of creating a sustainable cremation facility. It received approval from the Forest and Environment Department, Government of Meghalaya, in 2014. The Social Forestry Division of West Garo Hills, Tura, completed construction in 2018. However, the official dedication was delayed due to various issues and took place only now.
“This dedication is a triumph of collective effort and resilience,” said Prabin Panthi, President, THSBC. “We are deeply grateful to the Forest and Environment Department, Government of Meghalaya, and the community for their support in overcoming the obstacles that delayed this project. This eco-friendly crematorium will now serve as a sacred space for the Hindus of Tura, ensuring dignity in our rituals while preserving nature for future generations.”

The crematorium is based on a design by the late Kambel Shullai, which reduces smoke emissions, firewood consumption, and cremation time by one-third compared to traditional methods. It is intended to lower environmental impact and reduce pressure on local forests while maintaining traditional Hindu cremation practices.
This is the second eco-crematorium in West Garo Hills, with the first one set-up in Phulbari. However, the Tura eco-crematorium is the only one currently in operation.
