Shillong, Dec 29: Following government’s decision to shut down the Mawmluh Cherra Cements Limited (MCCL) after investments of over Rs 300 crores paid no dividends, the proscribed outfit Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) has threatened to hold NPP legislator from Sohra Gavin M Mylliemngap accountable and even kill him.
In a press communique issued on Friday, HNLC general secretary cum publicity secretary Sainkupar Nongtraw also asked the NPP legislator to resign as MLA. “If the government proceeds with the shutdown of MCCLtd, it would be appropriate for MLA Sohra Gavin to assume responsibility. In fact, he should resign from his position as MLA. If he refuses to step down, the HNLC will hold him accountable. Just as you and your government dare to bury MCCLtd alive, we will hold you accountable by our own actions. Traitors of the people should be punished with death,” Nongtraw said.
After a cabinet meeting on December 19, 2023, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma announced that the government has decided to close down the MCCL as efforts to revive the company have failed despite investing over Rs 350 crores in the last 15 years. He said the company still requires huge investments to move forward, which it supposedly doesn’t have. He also informed that the Government is amicably settling the matter with the stakeholders and employees and they have more or less come to a conclusion of going for voluntary retirement scheme, calling it a ‘golden handshake’ with permanent employees. He, however, clarified that the decision to close the MCCL was yet to be formalised.
Commenting on the government’s decision, Nongtraw said the threat by the Meghalaya government to permanently shut down MCCL is simply a political manoeuvre. He said the outfit strongly condemns this ill motive of the government, as it aims to leave the people of Sohra unemployed and subject them to the agenda of vested interests.
“Rather than prioritizing the improvement of MCCLtd, the government’s intention is to shut it down and instead promote the development of cement factories owned by non-tribals from other states. Unfortunately, this course of action significantly undermines the sentiments of the tribal community,” he claimed and argued that this raises serious doubts about the government’s ability to effectively manage the entire state if they cannot even handle this longstanding factory.
“It is evident that Meghalaya has already been ranked as the second poorest state in India, with the second-lowest per capita income in the country. Soon, there will be an intense competition for land and jobs in Meghalaya between indigenous and non-indigenous populations. The youth will become frustrated and desperate, resulting in a revolt against the government by any means necessary. This revolt will not stem from people losing their desire for freedom, but rather from the harsh reality that they have no food to eat,” he further warned.
