Tura, Nov 6: A male Hoolock Gibbon, aged around 6–7 years, escaped from its cage at the Huro Rescue Centre in Chinabat, East Garo Hills and was found electrocuted and seriously injured.
The incident reportedly occurred around 11 a.m. on Tuesday, when the gibbon came into contact with a live wire near the rescue centre.
Although it took some time for the rescue team to locate him, the gibbon was finally rescued on Wednesday and urgently transferred to Tura’s Nehru Park Range Forest Office for medical intervention.
A veterinarian from the Forest and Wildlife Department administered immediate treatment.
The gibbon is now under intensive care, but sources indicate that his injuries are severe and may require amputation.
