How the Modi government fortified India’s air defence and offensive capabilities

Must read

Operation Sindoor: A Turning Point

In a swift and coordinated response to Pakistani aggression, India’s Armed Forces executed Operation Sindoor, destroying nine terrorist camps in Pakistan and PoK. Pakistan attempted to retaliate with missile strikes targeting Indian military installations in Jammu & Kashmir, Punjab, Rajasthan, and Gujarat. None reached their targets—every missile was intercepted or neutralised.

This high-stakes confrontation showcased the effectiveness of India’s air defence architecture—developed and strengthened over 11 years under Prime Minister Narendra Modi—and exposed critical vulnerabilities in Pakistan’s own systems.

A Shield of Steel: India’s Air Defence Ecosystem
India’s multi-layered defence grid integrated cutting-edge systems, including:

S-400 Triumph squadrons (3 deployed since 2018)

Barak-8 MR-SAM units from the $2.5B deal with Israel

Indigenous Akash SAMs and DRDO’s counter-drone technologies

Integrated Counter-UAS Grid and Man-Portable Counter Drone Systems (MPCDS)

Together, these systems formed a seamless aerial shield capable of intercepting drones, missiles, and hostile aircraft.

Striking Back: The Offensive Edge
India didn’t stop at defence. Operation Sindoor also marked the combat debut of Indian-made loitering munitions and locally produced Harop drones, which delivered precision strikes on key Pakistani military assets, including an HQ-9 air defence unit in Lahore and radar sites in Karachi. The Rafale jets, equipped with SCALP and HAMMER missiles, added a surgical strike capability across enemy territory.

A Decade of Strategic Modernisation
Since 2014, the Modi government has pursued a consistent vision to transform India’s air and missile defence landscape:

Signed a Rs 35,000 crore deal for S-400s in 2018

Operationalised Barak-8 systems to guard frontline bases

Accelerated indigenous tech development for drones, anti-drone systems, and SAMs

Installed MPCDS nationwide by 2024

India’s Skies: Secured and Supreme
The success of Operation Sindoor reaffirms India’s strategic shift from reactive defence to proactive control. With a robust, tech-driven, and integrated system in place, India now ensures any threat is neutralised before it breaches national airspace.
