Shillong, July 21: The Hill State People’s Democratic Party (HSPDP) on Friday expressed strong opposition against any attempt by the Centre to implement the uniform civil code (UCC) in the state of Meghalaya.
“We have discussed at length the purpose and the intention of the government of India to implement the UCC in the country. As a party, we have decided to oppose the implementation of the UCC in the state of Meghalaya,” HSPDP president KP Pangniang told reporters after the party’s CEC meeting.
When asked, Pangniang said the party is aware of the fact that the state of Meghalaya is yet to receive the spirit and letter of the UCC.
“But as a party, we have decided to strongly oppose implementation of the UCC in Meghalaya. Therefore, we will soon submit a letter to the government on this matter with immediate effect,” he added.
Pangniang also informed that the party has decided to remind the state government on the demand for implementation of the inner line permit (ILP) and inclusion of the Khasi language in the Eighth Schedule to the Constitution of India.
“We will remind the government of the day on the need to take a follow up step in this regard. We have entrusted our minister to take up the matter with the government,” he said.
Meanwhile, the HSPDP has maintained a firm stand against bringing railway lines without anti-influx mechanisms in place.
“(Our manifesto is very clear on this that) unless and until mechanisms are put in place to protect the state from influx, there will be no discussion to bring railway lines in Jaintia Hills or Khasi Hills. First of all, we need the government to put in place mechanisms to prevent influx from entering the state. That is the stand of the party,” he stated.
