The month-long golden jubilee celebrations of the establishment of the Tura Catholic Diocese in the Garo Hills region began on Thursday. The 50 years establishment of the Catholic Church in Garo Hills would be widely celebrated by the faithful across the Garo Hills region and beyond. It is to be mentioned here that the All Souls’ Day, also known as the Day of the Dead, which is observed by the Catholics on November 2nd every year worldwide, was observed a day prior on November 1, 2023 at the Catholic Cemetery, Cherangre in Tura in view of the month long golden jubilee celebrations of the Tura Catholic Diocese.

Along with the rest of the world, the Catholic faithful in Shillong observed the All Souls’ Day at the Catholic cemetery, Laitumkhrah on Thursday. Christians remember the departed on this day and offer special prayers at their graves. As a mark of remembrance, relatives and friends offer prayers and decorate their loved ones’ tombs with candles and flowers. In Williamnagar, the Catholic faithful embraced this occasion by participating in a solemn Mass, adorning it with flowers, and illuminating it with candles. Their prayers were dedicated to the souls of their departed family members and friends. The cemetery of Williamnagar was adorned with an abundance of flowers and candles, creating a poignant and reverent atmosphere.

The Nongkrem Dance Festival or the ‘Shad Pomblang’ this year concluded amidst a sea of people from various villages in Khasi Hills and several tourists flocking to the courtyard of the grand ‘Iing Sad’ at the Smit Village, the capital of the Khyrim Syiemship, to witness one of the oldest traditional rituals of the Khasi Tribe. The 5-day religious festival of the Khasi Tribe is performed to appease the all powerful Goddess ‘Ka Blei Synshar’ for a rich bumper harvest and prosperity of the people. Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong, Chief Secretary D.P Wahlang, deputy commissioner R. M Kurbah, CEM Pyniaid Sing Syiem, MDC Fantin Lakadong, Grace Kharpuri, Lamphang Blah, P. N Syiem, MLA Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit, Shakliar Wajri, DGP of Meghalaya, Dr Dr. Lajja Ram Bishnoi were present at the festival.

Harbax Singh Dhillon has taken over as the Inspector General of the Border Security Force (BSF) for the Meghalaya Frontier. As of November 1, 2023, he officially assumed his new role, overseeing the frontier’s security and operations Shillong. Meanwhile, in a major bust, authorities in Meghalaya have intercepted a massive cache of clothing and cosmetic items worth Rs 11 lakh (approximately 4 billion Bangladeshi Taka) intended for smuggling into Bangladesh through the international border in East Khasi Hills.

The Ministry of Railways, in partnership with IRCTC Ltd., is set to launch the ‘North East Discovery’ tour, aiming to spotlight the relatively unexplored North Eastern states of India,” as per a Ministry statement. As per an official announcement, this specially curated tour aboard the Bharat Gaurav Deluxe AC Tourist train is scheduled to embark from Delhi Safdarjung Railway Station on November 16, 2023. The tour includes visits to Guwahati, Sivasagar, Jorhat, and Kaziranga in Assam, as well as Unakoti, Agartala, and Udaipur in Tripura. The tour will also explore Dimapur and Kohima in Nagaland, and Shillong and Cherrapunji in Meghalaya, all over the span of a 15-day journey.

Mizoram BJP president (in-charge) Vanupa Zathang on Thursday stated thet the BJP is ready for a post-poll alliance with either the ruling Mizo National Front (MNF) or the Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) – the main opposition party in Mizoram. Zathang said that the BJP is ready for a post-poll alliance with either the MNF or the ZPM – whichever wins the most number of seats in the Mizoram assembly elections. It may be mentioned here that the BJP is contesting 23 seats out of the total 40 in Mizoram, for which elections will be held on November 07.
