Tura, May 24: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Friday paid a visit to the Garo Labour Corps monument, built in honor of the Garos who went to France in the First World war to help the allied forces, and announced a renovation project of two crore rupees.

The chief minister came to the site to see for himself the condition of the memorial after it was brought to light by HUB NEWS about the pathetic condition of the oldest memorial which has been turned into a revelers den at night with youngsters drinking and empty bottles and garbage strewn all around.

The Tura Municipal Board maintains the war memorial.

“I have come to see personally the condition after getting reports of anti-social elements misusing this revered place. We are going to renovate the memorial and funds to the tune of around Rs 2 crore will be released. We will keep the cenotaph memorial intact, it will not be disturbed. But surrounding areas will be developed with seating arrangements for visitors with other facilities. This is a very important and historic place that we all need to honor and preserve,” said the chief minister.
