Shillong, Aug 18: The Chairperson of the Meghalaya Human Right Commission (MHRC) Justice T. Vaiphei is to head the judicial enquiry into the killing of Ex-HNLC leader (L) Cheristerfield Thangkhiew, announced Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Wednesday.
“Being the Chairperson of the Meghalaya Human Rights Commission and also being the Chairperson of this inquiry committee, he will be serving both the purposes from the human rights aspect and also ensuring that this judicial inquiry is given complete freedom and independence and full power to look into all aspects of this particular case,” the Chief Minister stated.
On the sidelines of this latest announcement, locality headmen representing the Mawlai area met with the Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong and cabinet ministers Hamletson Dohling and Renikton Lyngdoh.

During the meeting, the leaders of the organisation submitted a memorandum to the Government on their charter of demands, which included suspension of police officials involved in the incident, not to deploy any central forces in the Mawlai area, ban on internet service and night curfew to be revoked, shifting of temporary CRPF camp from the area.
“As a Government we have noted down the concerns raised by the organisations from Mawlai,” said Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, while interacting with the media.
In regards to the demand for suspension of the police officials over the killing of the former HNLC leader, the Chief Minister said that once the judicial inquiry report comes out, the government based on the outcome of the report will take appropriate action. “The government will examine all options and then take a call on the matter,” the Chief Minister added.
