Human trafficking ring through Assam-Meghalaya: Delhi Police uncover Bangladesh-India network

Must read

Guwahati, Dec 31: Delhi Police have dismantled a human trafficking ring smuggling young Bangladeshi women into India for forced prostitution, exposing a grim trade route that cuts through Assam and Meghalaya.

The network came to light during the investigation of a murder case in New Delhi, uncovering the exploitation of porous borders to transport victims to the capital.

Authorities arrested Animul Islam, a key figure in the operation, on Saturday evening. A resident of Krishnai in Assam’s Goalpara district, Islam reportedly used his vehicle to shuttle victims across the Meghalaya-Assam border.

The breakthrough investigation revealed that four Bangladeshi women, linked to the murder case, were victims of trafficking. Police allege that the deceased and an accomplice, Anis, played active roles in supplying these women to Delhi’s sex trade.

The case underscores the growing threat of human trafficking in the region. Assam accounted for 22% of India’s trafficking cases in 2015, driven by conflict and climate displacements. Reports from 2018 estimate that 50,000 Bangladeshi women and children are trafficked into India annually, many forced into urban brothels.

Experts emphasize the urgency of addressing trafficking through Assam’s and Meghalaya’s porous borders, calling for enhanced surveillance and regional collaboration.
