Tura, May 7: Hundreds of aspiring medical students from Garo Hills appeared for the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) at three centres in Tura, West Garo Hills on Sunday.
This is the second time NEET has been conducted in the region, with a total of 712 students applying for the exam this year.
Last year, NEET was conducted for the first time in the region. This year, two more centres were added – Capt. William School and Nokrek Heights School. Donbosco College had the highest number of applicants with 400 students, followed by Capt. William School with 144 students, and Nokrek Heights School with 168 students.
NEET is a national-level entrance exam for students who want to pursue undergraduate medical courses such as MBBS, dental (BDS), and AYUSH (BAMS, BUMS, BHMS, etc.) in government and private institutions in India. The exam is also for those who intend to pursue primary medical qualifications abroad.
The NEET centres had also prominently put-up banners at the gate on items that are not allowed inside the test centre. These items included: Cellular devices, earphones, touch pen, pendrive/Bluetooth, calculator, paperchits, eatables, jewellery/accessories, watch, purse/wallet, googles, camera and book/notebooks.
The students were seen waiting outside the centres from early in the morning, as the process of registration and frisking is quite stringent and takes time. The NEET results are usually announced within a month to 45 days after the test.
