Guwahati, July 10: Around 300 residents of Rukminigaon, a locality in Guwahati, staged a protest on Wednesday morning against recurring artificial flooding in the area.

The protest rally began at 9 AM. Locals gathered to voice their concerns about the inadequate drainage systems and the lack of effective action from the concerned authorities in handling the situation. They also carried placards and chanted slogans, urging the government to address their plight urgently.

Speaking to Hub News, one protester explained, “We haven’t faced such artificial flooding for many years. But for the last three years, the situation has changed, and it has become a permanent problem for the residents. This is due to the failure of the concerned department.” She added that the flooding is caused by the diversion of rainwater from other areas rather than rainfall.

It is noteworthy that the issue of artificial flooding in Rukminigaon and places in Guwahati city has multiple causes, including rapid encroachment along riverbanks, reducing the water-carrying capacity of rivers like the Bahini-Bharalu, an unscientific and inadequate drainage system unable to handle heavy rainfall, and clogged drains leading to water accumulation, to mention a few.

These recurring floods have significantly disrupted daily life, forcing shops to close and residents to remain indoors during artificial flooding. Locals await concrete measures from the district administration and Guwahati Municipal Corporation, in particular, to tackle the flooding.
