Shillong, Nov 7: The Hynñiewtrep Youth Council (HYC) on Thursday held a public meeting at Motphran to highlight the rising cases of drug abuse in the State, urging the government to take strong action.

Notably, HYC has demanded for a special police force to combat drug-related crimes and advocated for establishment of additional rehabilitation centres across the state.

The event saw deployment of heavy security, with police officials on high alert and personnel equipped with shields and batons to maintain law and order.

In addition, many shops, especially those run by non-tribals, chose to down their shutters along the stretch from Motphran to Khyndailad along the G.S. Road.

While the government has given informal assurance that it will consider HYC’s demands, the council insists on receiving a formal response in writing.

The HYC warned that if the government fails to act on their requests, they will escalate their efforts, potentially staging a protest at the Secretariat.
