Shillong, March 22: With an aim to promote cleanliness and hygiene in healthcare, the North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS) organized a swachhta conference, titled ‘Hygeia 2025’, on Friday to promote best practices in sanitation, infection control, and hygiene across healthcare settings. The event drew over 140 participants from hospitals and health facilities in Shillong and neighbouring areas.
The conference was organized by the Department of Sanitation, and focused on a wide range of topics, including infection control in hospitals, cleanliness protocols in critical care areas like operation theatres and ICUs, as well as the mental health and stress management of sanitation staff. Experts from the Institute of Hotel Management (IHM) Shillong and the State Pollution Control Board also shared insights on safe food practices and biomedical waste management.

Speaking at the event, Prof. Vandana Raphael, Officiating Director of NEIGRIHMS, congratulated the Department of Sanitation for organizing the conference. She emphasized the importance of such platforms in promoting knowledge exchange among various departments working toward maintaining hygiene and cleanliness in healthcare institutions.
Prof. Suvamoy Chakraborty, Officiating Medical Superintendent, appealed to staff and visitors to maintain cleanliness within the hospital premises and avoid littering.
David Umdor, Officiating Deputy Director (Administration), highlighted NEIGRIHMS’ ongoing efforts to improve sanitation infrastructure. He informed attendees about plans to install water purification systems to prevent water-borne infections and the upcoming development of a dedicated sanitation block for the department, aimed at improving overall hygiene outcomes at the institute.

The event also featured interactive activities to engage participants. A ‘Best Out of Waste’ competition and a quiz were held to reinforce the importance of sustainability and sanitation awareness.
Supercare Hospital, Mawiong CHC, and NEIGRIHMS bagged the top three prizes in the waste competition, while Reid Provincial Chest Hospital, Ganesh Das Hospital, and Civil Hospital won the first, second, and third prizes respectively in the quiz competition.
