IED blast at PB: Conrad assures such incidents will not be repeated in future

Shillong, Feb 1: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma has assured that the government will do its best to ensure that incidents such as the IED blast at Police Bazar on Sunday evening are not repeated again.

“We will do everything that peace is restored and no such incidents should take place in the future,” said Sangma here on Tuesday as the government has been drawing flak for its inability to avert the incident after a similar explosion at Laitumkhrah Market few months back.

He said the police and the government is working overtime and all those involved will not be spared.

“The govt will do everything that needs to be done to ensure that justice is done and no other incidents like this should happen in the future. The government is very firm on it. Within a few days we will be revealing more information since the police are still investigating,” added Sangma.

On January 30, an IED blast took place in front of a commercial complex in Police Bazar (PB). There were no casualties. Banned militant outfit Hynñiewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) claimed responsibility for the IED blast.

Unfair to call it intelligence failure

The CM also rejected claims of intelligence failure by the opposition, saying it would be unfair to term the PB incident as such since many incidents have been averted due to intelligence inputs.

“When we talk of intelligence we get thousands of intelligence every day. It is a massive network of information that flows in and the police and govt go through all this information and intel and act accordingly. That is how a lot of things are stopped. So while these kinds of things are happening nobody realises the kind of intel that has come in and because of it a lot of untoward incidents have been stopped but there are some situations which do happen which is unfortunate,” he said.

The chief minister also lauded the intelligence and police department who were able to apprehend the culprits in a very short time after the incident.

“The intelligence and police department are working very hard they have all the information,” added Sangma.
