If Modi convince us on CAA, we will drop the idea of agitation: Assam Congress chief

Guwahati, Mar 6: Assam Pradesh Congress Committee(APCC) president Bhupen Kumar Borah on Tuesday said that they have sent a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeking his time for a meeting but did not get any response till date.

Speaking to mediapersons, APCC president Bhupen Kumar Borah said, “We have sent a letter to PM Modi seeking his time for a meeting but did not get any response. In the letter, we have mentioned that we can meet him in Assam or in New Delhi. In the meeting with him, we want to apprise him on ‘why we are against Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and if PM Modi can convince us that CAA will be beneficial for Assam and if we are convinced then we can droped the idea of agitation,”.

“If PM Modi do not give us time for the meeting, all the 16 political parties have already sent a letter to President through Assam Governor and till date we have not received any formal response. If our request are not taken seriously then we have only option left for agitation,” Borah said.

After the Central government have announced that they will implement CAA before election, the opposition parties and All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) have announced a series of agitation against CAA but due to board exam the protest programme are postponed.

On the other hand, Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma claimed that there was no relevance of any protest against CAA at this point and said that all those opposed to the law may approach the Supreme Court for revoking it.
